Methicillin Resistance Test
WeDetect Methicillin Resistance Test
Detects the mecA gene behind methicillin resistance in staphylococci, with a result in 40–50 minutes so treatment can be targeted from the first consultation.
Why methicillin resistance matters
Methicillin-resistant staphylococci, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) in dogs, are an established concern in small animal practice. The mecA gene makes these bacteria resistant to most beta-lactam antibiotics, including the penicillins and cephalosporins often chosen first.
If MRSP or MRSA causes a skin, ear, wound or urinary tract infection, first-line treatment is likely to fail. Culture results usually take several days, so treatment is often started before resistance is known.
How the test supports your decision
- Avoid ineffective first-line treatment: know whether beta-lactams are an option at the first visit
- Support responsible antimicrobial use: base the choice of antibiotic on evidence rather than assumption
- Act on infection control early: identify resistant infections so hygiene measures can start straight away
- Explain the treatment plan clearly: discuss results with the owner during the same visit
How it works
The test uses loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), a molecular method that runs at one constant temperature. No thermal cycler or laboratory is needed.
Collect the sample
Swab the lesion or ear, or use a urine sample or bacterial colony, as described in the instructions for use.
Run the test
Add the prepared sample to the test vessel and place it in the WeDetect heat block.
Read the result
After 40–50 minutes, read a positive or negative result for mecA.

The test detects a genetic resistance marker. Results should be read together with the clinical picture. Culture and susceptibility testing remain recommended for serious or recurrent infections.
Frequently asked questions
Which patients should be tested?
Patients with recurrent or non-responding pyoderma, otitis, wound or surgical site infections, and animals with previous antibiotic treatment, hospital stays or known contact with MRSP or MRSA.
What does a positive result mean?
The mecA gene was detected. Treat the staphylococcal infection as methicillin-resistant: beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins, amoxicillin-clavulanate and cephalosporins should not be expected to work. Culture and susceptibility testing can guide the choice among the remaining options.
Does a negative result rule out resistance?
A negative result means mecA was not detected in the sample. The test does not detect mecC or resistance to other antibiotic classes, and results should always be read together with the clinical picture.
What equipment do I need?
Only the WeDetect heat block, which WeDetect supplies at low cost. No thermal cycler or laboratory equipment is needed.
Can it be combined with other WeDetect tests?
Yes. Clindamycin is often considered when a staphylococcus is methicillin-resistant, so the test pairs well with the WeDetect Clindamycin Resistance Test.
