WeDetect Clindamycin Resistance Test

Detects the erm(B) gene behind clindamycin resistance, including inducible resistance that routine susceptibility testing can miss, with a result in 40–50 minutes.

Why clindamycin resistance matters

Clindamycin is widely used for staphylococcal skin, wound, bone and dental infections in dogs and cats, and is often considered when a staphylococcus is methicillin-resistant. Resistance is common and is mainly caused by erm genes, which alter the antibiotic’s target in the bacteria. The WeDetect test detects erm(B).

Some strains appear susceptible to clindamycin in routine testing but express resistance during treatment. This inducible resistance is only found with an additional laboratory test (the D-test). Because the WeDetect test detects the erm(B) gene itself, these strains are also identified.

How the test supports your decision

  • Choose clindamycin on evidence: know whether it is an option before you prescribe
  • Identify inducible resistance: detect strains that a standard susceptibility result can miss
  • Support responsible antimicrobial use: avoid treatment courses that are unlikely to work
  • Start targeted treatment sooner: act at the first visit rather than waiting days for culture

How it works

The test uses loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), a molecular method that runs at one constant temperature. No thermal cycler or laboratory is needed.

1

Collect the sample

Swab the lesion or wound, or use a bacterial colony, as described in the instructions for use.

2

Run the test

Add the prepared sample to the test vessel and place it in the WeDetect heat block.

3

Read the result

After 40–50 minutes, read a positive or negative result for erm(B).

The test detects a genetic resistance marker. Results should be read together with the clinical picture. Culture and susceptibility testing remain recommended for serious or recurrent infections.

Frequently asked questions

What is inducible clindamycin resistance?

Some bacteria carry an erm gene that is only switched on after exposure to a macrolide or a similar antibiotic. In a standard susceptibility test they can appear susceptible to clindamycin, yet resistance may develop during treatment. Laboratories use the D-test to find these strains. The WeDetect test detects the gene directly, so these strains are reported as resistant if they carry erm(B).

What does a positive result mean?

The erm(B) gene, which confers clindamycin resistance, was detected. Clindamycin should not be relied on for this infection. Culture and susceptibility testing can guide the choice among other options.

Does a negative result mean clindamycin will work?

A negative result means erm(B) was not detected. Other resistance genes, such as erm(C), are not covered by the test, and results should always be read together with the clinical picture.

What equipment do I need?

Only the WeDetect heat block, which WeDetect supplies at low cost. No thermal cycler or laboratory equipment is needed.

Can it be combined with other WeDetect tests?

Yes. It pairs well with the WeDetect Methicillin Resistance Test, so both treatment options can be checked at the same visit.
